Who Let Dr. Strangelove Write the Pentagon\u2019s Nuclear Posture Review?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

(COMMONDREAMS<\/a>)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0The Pentagon\u2019s official outline for its use of nuclear force was denounced as \u201cradical\u201d and \u201cextreme\u201d by prominent anti-nuclear weapons groups when it was released Friday afternoon\u2014confirming peace advocates\u2019\u00a0worst fears<\/a>\u00a0that the Trump administration would seek to expand the use of nuclear force.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho in their right mind thinks we should expand the list of scenarios in which we might launch nuclear weapons?\u201d asked Peace Action in a\u00a0statement.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWho let Dr. Strangelove write the Nuclear Posture Review?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) calls for the development of smaller warheads that the military believes would be seen as more \u201cusable\u201d against other nations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn support of a strong and credible nuclear deterrent, the United States must\u2026maintain a nuclear force with a diverse, flexible range of nuclear yield and delivery modes that are ready, capable, and credible,\u201d reads the\u00a0report,<\/a>\u00a0which serves as the first updated document the U.S. has released regarding its perceived nuclear threats since 2010.<\/p>\n

In addition to \u201cdiversifying\u201d its nuclear arsenal, the Pentagon notes that it will seek to \u201cexpand the range of credible U.S. options for responding to nuclear or non-nuclear strategic attack,\u201d raising concerns that President Donald Trump will argue for the use of nuclear force as a deterrent\u2014a significant departure from previous administrations which saw nuclear weapons as an option only for retaliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe risk of use for nuclear weapons has always been unacceptably high,\u201d said Beatrice Fihn, executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). \u201cThe new Trump Nuclear Doctrine is to deliberately increase that risk. It is an all-out attempt to take nuclear weapons out of the silos and onto the battlefield. This policy is a shift from one where the use of nuclear weapons is possible to one where the use of nuclear weapons is likely.\u201d<\/p>\n
