Just as the World Economic Summit was opening in Davos, Switzerland, and President Donald Trump was flying in to put his mark on the moment, PwS, a global consulting firm, released its annual survey of 1,300 CEOs. \u201cThe report,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/powerpost\/paloma\/the-finance-202\/2018\/01\/22\/the-finance-202-global-business-elites-have-never-been-more-confident\/5a6617a030fb0469e88402e1\/?hpid=hp_hp-more-top-stories_finance202-634am%3Ahomepage%2Fstory&amp;utm_term=.5ad9a5b7bbb9\">wrote<\/a> the <em>Washington Post<\/em>&#8216;s Tory Newmyer, \u201cfound CEO optimism at a record high &#8212;\u00a0with 57% predicting growth would\u00a0accelerate worldwide this year &#8212; after lodging its biggest single-year leap, up from just 29% who predicted as much last year.\u201d In the wake of the passage of staggering tax cuts for corporations and the truly wealthy, the most ebullient among them were, of course, North American CEOs!<\/p>\n<p>And that wasn\u2019t even the best news, not if you lived in a penthouse somewhere on this planet anyway.\u00a0 As Davos began, Oxfam <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org\/en\/pressroom\/pressreleases\/2018-01-22\/richest-1-percent-bagged-82-percent-wealth-created-last-year\">issued<\/a> \u201cReward Work, Not Wealth,\u201d its new report indicating that \u201c82% of the wealth generated last year went to the richest one percent of the global population, while the 3.7 billion people who make up the poorest half of the world saw no increase in their wealth.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, and here\u2019s a footnote of further cheer from Oxfam: \u201cIt takes just four days for a CEO from one of the top five global fashion brands to earn what a Bangladeshi garment worker will earn in her lifetime. In the U.S., it takes slightly over one working day for a CEO to earn what an ordinary worker makes in a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In that context, Donald Trump gave an America First, exceptionalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/01\/26\/full-text-trump-davos-speech-transcript-370861\">pep talk<\/a> at Davos filled with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/26\/us\/politics\/trump-davos-speech-fact-check.html\">expectable<\/a> falsehoods, lies, and exaggerations to a crowd &#8212; \u201csome of the remarkable citizens from all over the world,\u201d as he put it &#8212; primed to applaud (though there were a few <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2018\/jan\/26\/donald-trump-booed-in-davos-as-he-woos-businesses\">hisses<\/a> and boos and the rare <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/web\/status\/956911229708193795\">protest<\/a>, too).<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomgram: Nomi Prins, How to Set the Economy on Fire There\u2019s no way to measure just how cheery this period really is &#8212; not if you\u2019re the CEO of a major company.
