Meanwhile, the\u00a0<i>Washington Post<\/i>\u00a0ran an opinion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/victor-cha-giving-north-korea-a-bloody-nose-carries-a-huge-risk-to-americans\/2018\/01\/30\/43981c94-05f7-11e8-8777-2a059f168dd2_story.html?utm_term=.f2fb3f281b66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece<\/a>\u00a0written by the man who was, until recently, set to become the U.S. ambassador to South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Victor Cha, a professor at Georgetown University and senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/30\/politics\/victor-cha-ambassador-to-south-korea\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a>\u00a0passed all U.S. security checks, and South Korea had signed off on him.<\/p>\n<p>It was expected \u2014 and for the government in Seoul,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2017\/12\/trump-finally-taps-ambassador-to-south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hoped<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 that Trump would soon formally nominate Cha for Senate approval. But over the weekend, it was reported that the White house informed Cha he was no longer being considered for the post.<\/p>\n<p>Sources\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/30\/politics\/victor-cha-ambassador-to-south-korea\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">say<\/a>\u00a0the move was motivated by Cha\u2019s disagreement with the Trump administration\u2019s policy on North Korea. In particular, these sources say, the would-be ambassador took issue with the White House considering a preemptive strike against the Hermit Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for the\u00a0<i>Washington Post<\/i>\u00a0on Tuesday, Cha\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/victor-cha-giving-north-korea-a-bloody-nose-carries-a-huge-risk-to-americans\/2018\/01\/30\/43981c94-05f7-11e8-8777-2a059f168dd2_story.html?utm_term=.f2fb3f281b66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>\u00a0that the answer to the North Korean question\u00a0<i>\u201cis not, as some Trump administration officials have suggested, a preventive military strike.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Rather, Cha wrote, there are options available to address the threat\u00a0<i>\u201cwithout escalating into a war that would likely kill tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of Americans.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Cha, who previously\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/united-states-canada\/article\/2131296\/disagreement-north-korea-policy-may-have-derailed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">served<\/a>\u00a0in the administration of George W.
