In this op-ed, Caitlin Johnstone responds to Bernie Sanders\u2019 promotion of unproven allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.<\/p>\n

In an otherwise fine video response to Tuesday night\u2019s vapid, flag-waving State of the Union address, Bernie Sanders once again promoted the\u00a0neocon think tank-generated<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0unproven<\/a>\u00a0claim that Russia interfered in America\u2019s 2016 elections via \u201ccyberwarfare,\u201d and repeated the\u00a0completely baseless<\/a> insinuation that they colluded with Trump to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can he not talk about the reality that Russia, through cyberwarfare, interfered in our election in 2016, is interfering in democratic elections all over the world, and according to his own CIA director will likely interfere in the 2018 midterm elections that we will be holding?\u201d\u00a0asked the Vermont Senator<\/a>. \u201cHow do you not talk about that unless you have a very special relationship with Mr. Putin?\u201d<\/p>\n

This is not an exception to the rule for Sanders, but one more addition to an already\u00a0consistent<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0deliberate<\/a>\u00a0pattern<\/a>. In February of last year Sanders delivered a\u00a0widely viewed video message<\/a>\u00a0to his massive online audience solely geared at promoting the Russiagate narrative. At the end of March,\u00a0he did it again<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In May,\u00a0he did it again<\/a>.\u00a0Over<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0over<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0over<\/a>\u00a0again,\u00a0month<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0month<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0month<\/a>, Sanders has been\u00a0using his immense platform<\/a>\u00a0as the most popular and trusted politician in America to\u00a0sell<\/a>\u00a0these world-threatening\u00a0cold war escalations<\/a>\u00a0to the millions of Americans who adore him.<\/p>\n

This is a big deal. This is not some petty quibble with Sanders\u2019 policies like disagreeing with the specifics of his stance on free trade or fracking. This is not some minor detail which can be dismissed with accusations of purism and impracticality and \u201cHey, no politician is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n
