In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment.\u00a0 Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security.\u00a0 To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives.\u00a0 We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<section class=\"post-content\">\n<blockquote><p><em>. . . . This process cannot be a liberal or peaceful one. . . .<\/em>\u2013George Kennan in a 1948 memorandum<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2018-01-29\/the-peace-fallacy\/#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Andrew Bacevich is a leading commentator on and critic of America\u2019s senseless \u201chabit for war,\u201d as he puts it.\u00a0 His foremost concern is our going-on-sixteen-year debacle in Afghanistan, though he is naturally troubled by our other misadventures in Iraq and North Africa, as well as our propensity for international violence in general.<\/p>\n<p>Bacevich has recently asked when we might see \u201cA Harvey Weinstein Moment for America\u2019s Wars?\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/www.resilience.org\/stories\/2018-01-29\/the-peace-fallacy\/#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a>\u00a0 When, in other words, will something like the \u201csudden shift in the cultural landscape\u201d that was precipitated by the brave women who stood up against Weinstein be seen in response to \u201cour penchant for waging war across much of the planet\u201d?\u00a0 Although he remains deeply disappointed by the distracted acceptance of these wars by the American public, he claims to find some reason for optimism in the recent \u201cWeinstein moment\u201d: \u201con some matters, at least, the American people retain an admirable capacity for outrage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Peace Fallacy Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world\u2019s wealth but only 6.3% of the its population. . . .
