The Antidote to Optimism<\/a><\/h3>\n

It is always brightest before they turn the lights out.<\/p>\n

You can quote us on that, Dear Reader.<\/p>\n

Just when you thought things couldn\u2019t get better\u2026 guess what?<\/p>\n

They don\u2019t. They go dark as a dungeon.<\/p>\n

Antidote to Optimism<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our task today is to show that however wonderful things may appear in today\u2019s markets and economy, they may not be all that great.<\/p>\n

We put our backs into this grim work neither for love nor for money, but simply out of a sense of stern duty.<\/p>\n

If not us, who? If not now, when?<\/p>\n

Someone must put forward an antidote to the optimism now raging through markets around the world.<\/p>\n

Someone must make the case for cynicism, suspicion, and mockery.<\/p>\n

Someone must take the other side of the trade.<\/p>\n

And so\u2026 the work, like shucking oysters on a cold day, falls to us. We open them up\u2026 hoping to find a pearl.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump, Davos Man<\/strong>Instead, we find claptrap.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe elite gathering at Davos [including Donald Trump],\u201d begins a Financial Times<\/em>article, \u201ctakes place against a backdrop of improving economic activity across the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The IMF says it is the \u201cbroadest synchronized global growth upswing since 2010.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FT <\/em>goes on to tell us that the world economy is supposed to grow a healthy 3.9% \u201cthis year and next\u201d thanks, at least in part, to the sweeping tax reform measure just implemented in the U.S.<\/p>\n

Well, well, well. Gosh, it looks as though we were wrong about everything. You can predict the future after all.<\/p>\n

As for the tax cut, we didn\u2019t believe that the tax measure would have any positive consequences other than giving us more money.<\/p>\n

What economic benefit could be reaped by taking money from one pocket and putting it in another?<\/p>\n
