(Photo: Reuters)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__items\">\n<div class=\"field__item even\">\n<p>For residents of Cape Town, &#8220;Day Zero&#8221; is getting closer.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the day when taps in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csag.uct.ac.za\/2018\/01\/22\/facts-are-few-opinions-plenty-on-drought-severity-again\/\">drought-stricken<\/a> coastal South African city are projected run dry, and its residents would be forced to head to <a>police-guarded distribution sites<\/a> to obtain their daily ration of water.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"pullquote\">&#8220;Anyone who works in climate change knows that we&#8217;ve given lots of quite doomsday-esque scenarios in the last two decades. This is the first one which I&#8217;ve really seen come true.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014climatologist Simon Gear<\/span>The city <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capetown.gov.za\/Media-and-news\/Day%20Zero%20now%20likely%20to%20happen%20%E2%80%93%20new%20emergency%20measures\">warned<\/a> last week that the day was &#8220;now likely to happen.&#8221; And on Monday, the city, citing a drop in dam levels, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capetown.gov.za\/Media-and-news\/Non-water%20savers%20urged%20to%20join%20Team%20Cape%20Town%20water%20savers%20as%20Day%20Zero%20moves%20forward%20to%2012%20April%202018\">moved<\/a> the projected day up from April 22 to April 12.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have reached a point of no return,&#8221; Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-safrica-drought-capetown\/drought-hit-cape-town-at-point-of-no-return-tightens-water-targets-idUSKBN1F71Y4%20\">said<\/a> last week announcing tightened water restrictions for the city&#8217;s 4 million residents. Starting Feb. 1, residents face a 50 liter per day limit (13.2 gallons). [For comparison, Americans&#8217; daily home use is 88 gallons of water, the EPA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/watersense\/statistics-and-facts\">says<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>When Day Zero hits, the limit will be 25 liters per day, to be collected at one of 200 water collection points. <em>Agence France-Presse<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2018\/01\/panic-blame-cape-town-braces-water-shut-off\/\">reports<\/a>: &#8220;With about 5,000 families for each water collection point, the police and army are ready to be deployed to prevent unrest in the lines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>USA Today<\/em>, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2018\/01\/19\/cape-town-could-first-major-city-run-out-water\/1047237001\/\">reported<\/a> that &#8220;Each collection point will accommodate around 20,000 people per day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cape Town is being described as the first major city in the developed world that would run out of water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Climate Bellwether?
