Authorities have since raised the alert level to four out of five, meaning a potentially deadly major eruption is possible within days.\u00a0 The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology<a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/asia\/mayon-eruption-latest-news-volcano-explodes-philippines-alert-level-raised-authorities-warning-a8171486.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> (Phivolcs) raised its alert on Mayon to level 4,<\/a> signifying a hazardous eruption is imminent, from level 3, which warns that such an eruption could be \u201cweeks or even days\u201d away. \u201cWe strongly advise all people, both residents, and tourists, to avoid the danger zone, and airlines to avoid flying near the volcano summit,\u201d agency chief Renato Solidum\u00a0said in a public news conference.<\/p>\n<p>PHIVOLCS reported \u201cincreased seismic unrest, lava fountaining, and summit explosions\u201d in the area and\u00a0Solidum warned of two possible scenarios in<a href=\"http:\/\/cnnphilippines.com\/regional\/2018\/01\/22\/Mayon-Volcano-alert-level-4-Phivolcs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> the press conference on Monday<\/a>: continuous lava eruptions, or a more dangerous pyroclastic flow.\u00a0 (A pyroclastic flow is a mix of hot lava blocks, pumice, ash, and volcanic gas that moves at high speed down the slope of a volcano while typically following valleys, <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/vhp\/pyroclastic_flows.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the United States Geological Survey.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PyC8kbTD0x8\" width=\"560\" height=\"333\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Solidum said this eruption was a possible \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/reliefweb.int\/report\/philippines\/philippines-mt-mayon-volcanic-eruption-ocha-situation-report-no-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">smaller version [of the] 2001 eruption,<\/a>\u201d which had pyroclastic flow. Solidum said the agency had recorded increased seismic activity and \u201clava fountaining and a summit explosion\u201d from Sunday night, indicating more explosions could be ahead, including a hazardous eruption.
