The Largest Seed Exchange in the World Inspires Change – Shareable<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ethical consumers in the US are increasingly concerned with the seeds used in the production of their food. However, this has been an\u00a0issue in Europe for many years. In fact, there are several transnational seedsaver networks, like\u00a0<\/span>Arche Noah<\/span><\/a>, which have become policy reform experts on heritage seeds.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most famous groups within Arche Noah\u2019s 8,000 member network is the \u201clive\u201d seedbank\u00a0<\/span>Peliti<\/span><\/a>, which has been raising awareness about endangered varieties of heritage seeds since 1995. Once tiny,\u00a0now Peliti \u00a0is an NGO that receives<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>thousands of visitors<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for its<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>annual seed swap<\/span><\/a>\u00a0where you can get a mind boggling number of seed varieties for free.\u00a0<\/span>It’s the biggest event of its kind in the world\u00a0with an estimated 5,000 visitors last year from about 50 different countries. Recently\u00a0I had the opportunity to interview one of the 200 Peliti volunteers, who\u00a0are spread throughout Greece and\u00a0<\/span>beyond<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

They call themselves a\u00a0live seedbank<\/strong>\u00a0because traditional seedbanks store seeds under refrigeration, sometimes for up 10 to 15 years, which is “more like a seed museum than a seedbank,”\u00a0according to volunteer\u00a0<\/span>Vasso Kanellopoulou. Peliti concentrates on keeping their seeds reproducing and germinating so they don\u2019t fall vicitim to\u00a0genetic erosion<\/em><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0Originally they started out with only a few hundred varieties, now they have thousands they’re saving from extiction.<\/p>\n
