On Friday, the price of benchmark crude oil dropped to new\u00a0five-year lows<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The price of oil has been plummeting for months, leaving oil-producing nations around the world\u00a0aghast<\/a>\u00a0at their sinking revenues. Poor global economic growth has cut demand, while the U.S. is producing oil\u00a0faster than ever recorded<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prices fell further last month after Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies\u00a0blocked an effort\u00a0<\/a>at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to reduce production levels in order to boost the price of oil.<\/p>\n

The OPEC episode shows that it’s not only economists and oil barons who are concerned about the price crash. Many major oil producers are embroiled in domestic and international political crises, and political analysts are\u00a0watching closely<\/a>\u00a0to see how these countries react as revenues continue to decline. Iran,\u00a0struggling<\/a>\u00a0to balance its budget amid falling prices and international sanctions, this week\u00a0blamed<\/a>\u00a0longtime rival Saudi Arabia for a \u201cconspiracy against the interests of the region.\u201d Russia recently\u00a0warned<\/a>\u00a0that it will fall into recession in 2015.<\/p>\n
