China’s Xi Warns Military: Be Ready For War & “Don’t Fear Death”<\/a><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

In what is being characterized as a rare address to the world\u2019s\u00a0largest fighting force,\u00a0President Xi Jinping on January\u00a004 urged<\/a> the Chinese military to be\u00a0ready for war and \u2018don\u2019t fear death\u2019.<\/em><\/strong>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

As the beat of the war drums gets louder in East Asia and abroad, Xi\u2019s\u00a0rare speech to the military kicked off the New Year with a grim warning,<\/strong> as China and other countries in the region could be preparing for a turbulent year ahead.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s\u00a0soldiers should \u201cneither fear hardship nor death,\u201d <\/strong>Xi told thousands of troops during an inspection visit Wednesday\u00a0to the People\u2019s\u00a0Liberation Army\u2019s\u00a0(PLA) Central Theater Command in northern Hebei province, according to the official Xinhua news agency.<\/p>\n

Xi advised the military to continue improving upon its equipment, tactics, technology, and combat readiness by engaging in \u201creal combat training.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He further said, the need to \u201ccreate an elite and powerful force that is always ready for the fight, capable of combat and sure to win in order to fulfill the tasks bestowed by the Party and the people in the new era.\u201d<\/p>\n

In recent years, Xi has ushered in a period of modernization of China\u2019s\u00a0military, which has worried Asia and Washington alike.\u00a0<\/strong>Xi is\u00a0head of the Communist Party\u2019s\u00a0Central Military Commission, who is also the commander-in-chief of China\u2019s\u00a0two million-strong military. In October, he claimed his status to be the strongest leader in China that country\u00a0has seen in decades during the\u00a019th communist party congress.<\/p>\n

Local Chinese media outlets report that Xi\u2019s\u00a0mobilization meeting with the entire armed forces is a first of its kind.\u00a0Xi stated the goal of the Chinese military is to become a \u201cworld class\u201d force by 2050.\u00a0Perhaps, Xi has hinted at the time period when China expects to overtake the United States.<\/p>\n
