It\u2019s been very cold over North America for days, but globally,\u00a02017 has ended up smashing the record for the hottest year on record without an El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n

And that has scientists worried, since the warmest years usually happen when the long-term human-caused global warming trend gets a short-term boost from an\u00a0El Ni\u00f1o\u2019s enhanced warming<\/a>\u00a0in the tropical Pacific.<\/p>\n

The fact is that without global warming, \u201call the natural influences should have made the year cooler than normal; not hotter than normal,\u201d\u00a0professor of thermal sciences John Abraham<\/a> explained to ThinkProgress.<\/p>\n

2017 is so unexpectedly warm it is freaking out climate scientists<\/h3>\n

\u201cExtremely remarkable\u201d 2017 heads toward record for hottest year without an El Ni\u00f1o episode.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Climatologist Michael Mann said in an email that the recent spate of annual temperature records means that not only hasn\u2019t global warming warming slowed down, as the deniers have asserted, \u201cIf anything, it\u2019s accelerating as we continue to pump carbon into the atmosphere\u00a0through the burning of fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n

The chart below shows El Ni\u00f1os are generally the hottest years on record\u200a whereas La Ni\u00f1a years, with\u00a0their cooler-than-normal temperatures in the tropical Pacific,\u00a0are usually below<\/em> the global warming trend line.<\/p>\n

Environmental scientist Dana Nuccitelli explained in the\u00a0UK Guardian<\/a>\u00a0Tuesday, \u201cFor each type of year \u2014 La Ni\u00f1a, El Ni\u00f1o, and neutral \u2014 the global surface warming trend between 1964 and 2017 is 0.17\u20130.18\u00b0C per decade, which is\u00a0consistent with climate model predictions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n
