Natural disasters accounted for $131 billion of 2017\u2019s\u00a0insured losses, and man-made disasters for the remaining $5 billion. The human loss totaled around 11,000 deaths, similar to 2016.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-30_12-25-32.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39637\" src=\"https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/2017-12-30_12-25-32.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Martin Bertogg, Head of Catastrophe Perils at Swiss Re said, \u201cin recent years, annual insurance losses from disaster events have exceeded USD 100 billion a few times. The insurance industry has demonstrated that it can cope very well with such high losses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, significant protection gaps remain and if the industry is able to extend its reach, many more people and\u00a0businesses can become better equipped to withstand the fallout from disaster events,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-30-at-11.09.42-AM-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-39628\" src=\"https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-30-at-11.09.42-AM-1.png\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-30-at-11.09.42-AM-1.png 576w, https:\/\/stockboardasset.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Screen-Shot-2017-12-30-at-11.09.42-AM-1-300x167.png 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to Swiss Re,<strong>\u00a0\u201cextreme weather in the US in the second half of 2017\u201d has been the primary driver for high insured losses:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote><p>In August and September, three category 4+ hurricanes \u2013 Harvey, Irma, and Maria (HIM) \u2013 made landfall in the US.
