So you\u2019d think I\u2019d enjoy hearing people say good things about him, but very often, I don\u2019t. My reason is simple: the people who praise Jefferson seldom really understand him, and if they did, it\u2019s questionable that they\u2019d like him. (Others try to get rid of him by trashing his reputation.)<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-family: 'Droid Serif', Times, serif; font-weight: bold; line-height: 1.1; color: inherit; margin-top: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; font-size: 24px;\"><strong style=\"box-sizing: border-box; font-weight: bold;\">What People Don\u2019t Know<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">A crucial thing people don\u2019t know about Jefferson is this: he was fully convinced that freedom in America was fatally wounded\u2014in fact on its deathbed\u2014by 1810 or so. He maintained that he and his fellow founders had blown their opportunity and that American freedom had already slipped away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 0px;\">Now, since what I\u2019ve written above will seem almost inconceivable to many Americans, let me back it up by quoting a few of Jefferson\u2019s letters:<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10.5pt;\"><em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Letter to John Holmes, April 22, 1820:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10.5pt;\">I regret that I am now to die in the belief that the useless sacrifice of themselves by the generation of 1776, to acquire self-government and happiness to their country, is to be thrown away by the unwise and unworthy passions of their sons, and that my only consolation is to be, that I live not to weep over it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10.5pt;\"><em style=\"box-sizing: border-box;\">Letter to Nathaniel Macon, 1821:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10.5pt;\">Our government is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction.
