Dystopian Vietnam Launches 10,000-Strong Cyber-Unit To Combat “Fake News”<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Reuters has revealed<\/a> a rather disturbing Orwellian tale<\/strong> of Communist-ruled\u00a0Vietnam marching towards a complete censorship of the internet. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Government officials have announced a new, 10,000-strong military cyber warfare unit used to combat ‘fake news’, amid a much larger crackdown on critics of the state.<\/p>\n

The announcement came in a speech on Christmas Day given by\u00a0Lieutenant General Nguyen Trong Nghia, a deputy head of the military\u2019s political department.<\/strong> According to state-run media,\u00a0Lt Gen Nguyen revealed the 10,000-strong army of state-owned hackers called \u201cForce 47\u2033, will be targeting enemies of the Communist party who \u201ccreate chaos\u201d online.<\/p>\n

Lt Gen Nguyen further said,\u00a0\u201cin every hour, minute, and second, we must be ready to fight proactively against the wrong views.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cForce 47\u201d could be compared to the so-called\u00a050-cent army, employed by Communist\u00a0China, who are paid 50 cents for every website that is censored.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>Communist-ruled Vietnam has certainly escalated this latest attempt to control the internet, especially the ability to censor political dissidents\u00a0on social media.<\/p>\n

Bloomberg reports, the disclosure of the unit is the government\u2019s effort to put more pressure on YouTube Inc. and Facebook Inc. to remove accounts promoting anti-party views.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Facebook this year removed 159 accounts at Vietnam\u2019s behest, while YouTube took down 4,500 videos, or 90 percent of what the government requested, according to VietnamNet news, which cited Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan last week. The National Assembly is debating a cybersecurity bill that would require technology companies to store certain data on servers in the country.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Vietnam, one of the top countries in the world for Facebook users, has struggled with internet censorship. <\/strong><\/p>\n
