At its inception, the internet was a beautifully idealistic and equal place. But the world sucks and we\u2019ve continuously made it more and more centralized, taking power away from users and handing it over to big companies. And the worst thing is that we can\u2019t fix it\u200a\u2014\u200awe can only make it slightly less awful.<\/p>\n

That was pretty much the core of Pirate Bay\u2019s co-founder, Peter Sunde<\/a>\u2018s talk at tech festival Brain Bar Budapest<\/a>. TNW sat down with the pessimistic activist and controversial figure to discuss how screwed we actually are when it comes to decentralizing the internet.<\/p>\n

Forget about the future, the problem is\u00a0now<\/strong><\/p>\n

In Sunde\u2019s opinion, people focus too much on what might<\/em> happen, instead of what is <\/em>happening. He often gets questions about how a digitally bleak future could look like, but the truth is that we\u2019re living it.<\/p>\n

Everything has gone wrong. That\u2019s the thing, it\u2019s not about what will happen in the future it\u2019s about what\u2019s going on right now. We\u2019ve centralized all of our data to a guy called Mark Zuckerberg, who\u2019s basically the biggest dictator in the world as he wasn\u2019t elected by\u00a0anyone.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Trump is basically in control over this data that Zuckerberg has, so I think we\u2019re already there. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong and I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a way for us to stop\u00a0it.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One of the most important things to realize is that the problem isn\u2019t a technological one. \u201cThe internet was made to be decentralized,\u201d says Sunde, \u201cbut we keep centralizing everything on top of the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n
