{"id":29193,"date":"2017-12-27T13:44:42","date_gmt":"2017-12-27T18:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=29193"},"modified":"2017-12-27T13:44:42","modified_gmt":"2017-12-27T18:44:42","slug":"russia-establishes-two-permanent-bases-in-syria-to-host-nuclear-warships-and-warplanes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=29193","title":{"rendered":"Russia Establishes Two Permanent Bases In Syria To Host Nuclear Warships And Warplanes"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-12-27\/russia-establishes-two-permanent-bases-syria-host-nuclear-warships-and-warplanes\">Russia Establishes Two Permanent Bases In Syria To Host Nuclear Warships And Warplanes<\/a><\/h3>\n<section class=\"messages-holder\"><\/section>\n<section class=\"node node-type-story node-full node-nid-609903\">\n<div class=\"sub-title-box\">\n<div class=\"a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_32 a2a_default_style\" data-a2a-icon-color=\"#222\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Russia&#8217;s defense ministry has announced it is now in the process of\u00a0<strong>establishing two permanent military bases in war-torn Syria after President Putin authorized prior deals with the Syrian government to move forward.<\/strong>\u00a0Though Russia maintains merely\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bigthink.com\/strange-maps\/the-worlds-five-military-empires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to ten military bases on foreign soil<\/a>, the installations in Tartus and Khmeimim will be the most strategically located, allowing for a growing and permanent Russian presence on the\u00a0Mediterranean, something which has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2017\/12\/syria-russia-withdrawal-partial-troops-putin-iran-exploit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised eyebrows in the Wes<\/a>t.<\/p>\n<p>Though Putin formally\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-12-11\/putin-orders-withdrawal-russian-troops-syria-during-surprise-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u00a0the planned withdrawal of Russian forces from active operations in Syria in early December, there were parallel plans going back to at least early summer to maintain a smaller permanent presence based on\u00a0<strong>an agreement with the Damascus government to host Russian forces for at least 49 more years<\/strong>, which includes the option of being prolonged further.
