We\u2019re of course referring to an electromagnetic pulse. By detonating a hydrogen bomb in just the right spot miles above the Earth\u2019s surface, the North could permanently damage the US power grid \u2013 maybe even take it offline completely. B<strong>y robbing entire swaths of the US of electricity, the North could precipitate thousands \u2013 if not millions \u2013 of deaths.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The North first threatened <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-09-03\/super-powerful-emp-attack-north-koreas-newest-weapon-against-us\">an EMP attack <\/a>over the summer, and North Korean media and its people have mentioned it several times since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/12\/13\/2017.12.22sandy.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/12\/13\/2017.12.22sandy_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given the success of the North\u2019s missile tests, Congress increased funding for the Commission to Assess the Threat to the US from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack as part of the National Defense Authorization Act back in September.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, federal agencies and utility executives held GridEx IV, a biennial event where officials responsible for hundreds of local utilities game out scenarios in which North America\u2019s power grid could fail. Unsurprisingly, with the North Korean threat looming, these discussions took on a whole new level of urgency, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-12-22\/hardening-power-grids-for-nuclear-and-emp-attacks-by-north-korea\">Bloomberg <\/a>explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This year, the event took on an added urgency given growing concern with a weapon straight out of the Cold War: an electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, emanating from a nuclear blast &#8211; specifically, one delivered by a North Korean missile or satellite detonated miles above the Earth.
