US Military Rushes To Study Blockchain As ‘Hybrid Wars’ Loom<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

President Trump signed into law the 2018 National Defense Authorization\u00a0Act on Tuesday,\u00a0a $700 billion defense policy bill that mandates<\/a>for a \u201cbriefing on cyber applications of blockchain technology.\u201d<\/strong> Language within the bill is part of a much wider effort to modernize the United States military, before\u00a0decades of hybrid wars breakout (see:\u00a0US Army Is Preparing For Decades Of Hybrid Wars<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n

The blockchain study, according\u00a0to the bill text (Sec.1646<\/a>),\u00a0will create\u00a0\u201can assessment of efforts by foreign powers, extremist organizations, and criminal networks to utilize such technologies;\u2026[and] an assessment of the use or planned use of such technologies by the Federal Government and critical infrastructure networks.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Further, the study is to be delivered to Congress \u201cnot later than 180 days after the\u00a0date of the enactment of this act.\u201d<\/strong><\/u> <\/u>Coin Desk<\/a> adds while the study is set to be prepared by the Department of Defense, the final report could include input from other federal agencies and departments.<\/p>\n

Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the heads of such other departments and agencies of the Federal Government as the Secretary considers appropriate, shall provide to the appropriate committees of Congress a briefing on the cyber applications of blockchain technology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

And though it constitutes a minor element in major funding law, the measure, proposed by Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio, could help spur investigation into possible blockchain uses within the U.S. government, some observers say.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n
