Simply buy and hold long enough, the theory went, and you could sit back and watch the money accumulate in your account. No thought or hard work needed.<\/p>\n<p>It was a nifty strategy \u2014 until the idea burned most investors in 2008. Almost a decade later, the scar tissue is still fresh for many investors.<\/p>\n<p>Even today, after the U.S. stock market has rallied by 271% since the bottom on March 6, 2009 \u2014 nearly tripling investors\u2019 money \u2014 only about half of Americans are invested in the stock market, according to NPR. That\u2019s down from two-thirds compared to a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p>The rest are in cash on the sidelines. Maybe that\u2019s been you.<\/p>\n<p>And who can blame you? \u201c<i>Fool me once, shame on you<\/i>,\u201d the saying goes. \u201c<i>Fool me twice, shame on me<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last June, <i>Fortune<\/i> surveyed readers. 71% of respondents said \u201cthe economic system in the U.S. is rigged in favor of certain groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A few years earlier, the <i>Los Angeles Times<\/i> reported \u201c<i>Poll finds 64% of voters believe stock market is rigged against them\u2026<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Somebody\u2019s made gains from all of those sectors in the stock market. It just hasn\u2019t been Main Street.<\/p>\n<p>Since I\u2019ve left the world of big banking, I\u2019ve made it my mission to change that.
