{"id":28904,"date":"2017-12-16T12:28:55","date_gmt":"2017-12-16T17:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=28904"},"modified":"2017-12-16T12:28:55","modified_gmt":"2017-12-16T17:28:55","slug":"facebook-really-is-bad-for-you-researchers-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=28904","title":{"rendered":"Facebook Really Is Bad For You, Researchers Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-12-16\/facebook-really-bad-you-researchers-say\">Facebook Really Is Bad For You, Researchers Say<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<section class=\"node node-type-story node-full node-nid-609270\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Apparently, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-12-11\/i-feel-tremendous-guilt-former-facebook-exec-says-company-ripping-apart-social-fabri\">Chamath Palihapitiya<\/a> was on to something when he revealed earlier this week that he felt \u201ctremendous guilt\u201d for the role that he played in Facebook\u2019s success as a social-media company.<\/p>\n<p>To wit, Facebook&#8217;s director of research David Ginsberg and research scientist Moira Burke published a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.fb.com\/news\/2017\/12\/hard-questions-is-spending-time-on-social-media-bad-for-us\/\">blog post <\/a>this week explaining that, in some instances, the social network can have a deleterious impact on an individual\u2019s overall mood and health.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;University of Michigan students randomly assigned to read Facebook for 10 minutes were in a worse mood at the end of the day than students assigned to post or talk to friends on Facebook,&#8221; the blog post said. &#8220;A study from UC San Diego and Yale found that people who clicked on about four times as many links as the average person, or who liked twice as many posts, reported worse mental health than average in a survey.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, using Facebook to mindlessly browse through your feed or click posts can leave you in a foul mood after.<\/p>\n<p>However, the research wasn\u2019t exclusively negative. Facebook also worked with Carnegie Mellon University and found that &#8220;people who sent or received more messages, comments and timeline posts reported improvements in social support, depression and loneliness.&#8221; Likewise, Facebook said students at Cornell who used Facebook for 5 minutes while viewing their own profiles saw &#8220;boosts in self-affirmation,&#8221; while folks who looked at other profiles did not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/12\/13\/2017.12.15chamath.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user245717\/imageroot\/2017\/12\/13\/2017.12.15chamath_0.JPG\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Chamath Palihapitiya<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In other words, using Facebook to interact with people &#8211; as opposed to just &#8220;browsing&#8221; as the University of Michigan study analyzed &#8211; seemed to have a positive effect on people<\/p>\n<p>Facebook says it&#8217;s going to take this data and work to encourage more social interaction among users\u00a0 to try and cut down on those who spend it to waste time and, ultimately, feel worse after.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook Really Is Bad For You, Researchers Say\u00a0 Apparently, Chamath Palihapitiya was on to something when he revealed earlier this week that he felt \u201ctremendous guilt\u201d for the role that he played in Facebook\u2019s success as a social-media company.
