Russian Diplomat\u2019s Warning: \u2018Apocalyptic Scenario\u2019 Likely On Korean Peninsula<\/a><\/h3>\n

The tense situation over North Korea\u2019s nuclear program has one top Russian diplomat sounding the alarm.\u00a0Russian Deputy\u00a0Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov\u00a0said that the world can no longer turn a \u201cblind eye\u201d to alarming speed with which North Korea is advancing their weapons of mass destruction.<\/p>\n

North Korea\u2019s nuclear program could evolve\u00a0into an \u201capocalyptic\u201d scenario, Morgulov said.\u00a0 He was speaking at the opening of the eighth annual Asian Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club, which is being held in Seoul, South Korea,\u00a0<\/em>CNBC<\/em> reports<\/a>.\u00a0 \u201cI hope that a common sense,\u00a0pragmatism, and an instinct of self-preservation would prevail among our partners,\u201d Morgulov added.<\/p>\n

The Russian diplomat\u2019s remarks come amid global concerns over North Korean leader Kim Jong Un\u2019s refusal to abandon his nuclear ambitions despite mounting international pressure.<\/a> North Korea has conducted a record number of long-range missile tests this year, and in early September it carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test.<\/p>\n

Tensions\u00a0continue to heighten as Kim and President Donald Trump trade numerous threats and insults. Over the summer, Trump warned Pyongyang it would be met with \u201cfire and fury\u201d <\/a>if it didn\u2019t stop threatening the U.S. In late September while addressing the United Nations for the first time, he threatened to \u201ctotally destroy\u201d North Korea<\/a> if it forced the U.S. to defend itself or its allies.\u00a0In a speech to South Korea\u2019s National Assembly, president Trump denounced Kim\u2019s regime\u00a0but also offered the erratic leader a path to peace if he agreed to cease long-range missile tests and move toward denuclearization.<\/a> North Korea rejected his offer and said the president had\u00a0\u201cbegged\u201d\u00a0for nuclear war<\/a>\u00a0during his Asia trip.<\/p>\n
