U.S. GENERALS MIGHT STOP TRUMP FROM AN ILLEGAL NUCLEAR STRIKE \u2014 BUT WHO WILL SAVE US FROM A LEGAL ONE?<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

HE HAS BECOME<\/u> the latest in a long line of generals to be lionized by the anti-Trump #resistance. Speaking over the weekend, Gen. John Hyten<\/a>, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, or STRATCOM, which is responsible for nuclear deterrence, revealed what he would do if he were ordered to carry out a nuclear strike.<\/p>\n

\u201cI provide advice to the president,\u201d Hyten\u00a0told<\/a> an audience at the Halifax International Security Forum in Nova Scotia, Canada. \u201cHe\u2019ll tell me what to do, and if it\u2019s illegal, guess what\u2019s going to happen? I\u2019m gonna say, \u2018Mr. President, that\u2019s illegal.\u2019\u201d Hyten continued: \u201cGuess what he\u2019s going to do? He\u2019s going to say, \u2018What would be legal?\u2019 And we\u2019ll come up with options of a mix of capabilities to respond to whatever the situation is, and that\u2019s the way it works. It\u2019s not that complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

At first glance, Hyten\u2019s statement may sound comforting to those who stay awake at night, worrying about Trump\u2019s small hands hovering over the nuclear button. Last week, for the first time for more than 40 years<\/a>, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a hearing on the president\u2019s authority to launch nuclear weapons. \u201cWe are concerned that the president of the United States is so unstable, is so volatile \u2026 that he might order a nuclear weapons strike that is wildly out of step with U.S. national security interests,\u201d Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said<\/a> at the hearing.<\/p>\n

Senior members of Trump\u2019s inner circle seem to share those concerns. In October, Vanity Fair\u2019s Gabriel Sherman reported<\/a> that \u201cone former official even speculated that [chief of staff John] Kelly and Secretary of Defense James Mattis have discussed what they would do in the event Trump ordered a nuclear first strike. \u2018Would they tackle him?\u2019 the person said.\u201d<\/p>\n
