{"id":28103,"date":"2017-11-17T19:22:36","date_gmt":"2017-11-18T00:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=28103"},"modified":"2019-03-10T07:13:51","modified_gmt":"2019-03-10T12:13:51","slug":"the-demise-of-dissent-why-the-web-is-becoming-homogenized-in-other-words-well-be-left-with-officially-generated-and-sanctioned-fake-news-and-approved-dissent-weve-all-heard-that-the-probl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=28103","title":{"rendered":"The Demise of Dissent: Why the Web Is Becoming Homogenized"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"post-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/charleshughsmith.blogspot.com\/2017\/11\/the-demise-of-dissent-why-web-is.html\">The Demise of Dissent: Why the Web Is Becoming Homogenized<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"post-5514553515492722144\" class=\"post-body\">\n<div><i>In other words, we&#8217;ll be left with officially generated and sanctioned fake news and &#8220;approved&#8221; dissent.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><b>We&#8217;ve all heard that the problem with the web is&nbsp;<i>fake news<\/i>,<\/b>&nbsp;i.e. unsubstantiated or erroneous content that&#8217;s designed to mislead or sow confusion.<\/div>\n<div><b>The problem isn&#8217;t just&nbsp;<i>fake news<\/i>&#8211;it&#8217;s the homogenization of the web<\/b>, that is, the elimination or marginalization of independent voices of skepticism and dissent.<\/div>\n<div><b>There are four drivers of this homogenization:<\/b><\/div>\n<div>1. The suppression of dissent under the guise of&nbsp;<i>ridding the web of propaganda and fake news<\/i>&#8211;in other words, dissent is labeled&nbsp;<i>fake news<\/i>&nbsp;as a cover for silencing critics and skeptics.<\/div>\n<div>2. The sharp decline of advertising revenues flowing to web publishers, both major outlets and small independent publishers like Of Two Minds.<\/div>\n<div>3. The majority of advert revenues now flow into the coffers of the quasi-monopolies Facebook and Google.<\/div>\n<div>4. Publishers are increasingly dependent on these quasi-monopolies for readers and visibility: any publisher who runs afoul of Facebook and Google and is sent to Digital Siberia effectively vanishes.<\/div>\n<div><b>The reason why publishers&#8217; advert incomes are plummeting are four-fold:<\/b><\/div>\n<div>1. Most of the advert revenues in the digital market are being skimmed by Facebook and Google, as the chart below illustrates.<\/div>\n<div>2. Ad blockers have become ubiquitous.<\/div>\n<div>3. Few people click on the display ads that are the standard in desktop web publishing; in other words, these ads simply don&#8217;t work very well, and much of the revenue being generated is click-fraud, i.e. bots not real people clicking on adverts because they&#8217;re interested in the product\/service.
