Campaign For Catalan Uprising<\/a><\/h3>\n<section class=\"node node-type-story node-full node-nid-606991\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p><strong><em>No, not The Onion&#8230;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In what is perhaps the least surprising tactic from the Spanish establishment, a government-backed research institute in Madrid has stated that <strong>Spain\u2019s struggle to quash separatism in its Catalonia region was disrupted by Russian hackers agitating for a break-up, in a hallmark propaganda effort to fracture Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/11\/07\/20171110_russ.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/11\/07\/20171110_russ.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-11-08\/russian-hackers-fueled-catalan-separatism-madrid-institute-says\"><em>As Bloomberg reports,<\/em><\/a> the <strong>unidentified Russians spread both true and false messages on Facebook and Twitter during the illegal separatist referendum<\/strong> on Oct. 1, <strong>according to Mira Milosevich, a senior analyst at the Elcano Royal Institute.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u201cdezinformatsiya\u201d campaign deployed trolls, bots and fake accounts, and was <strong>backed by intense coverage from Russia\u2019s state-supported television, she said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cRussia has a nationalist agenda, and it supports nationalist, populist movements in Europe because that serves to divide Europe,\u201d<\/strong> Milosevich said Wednesday in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher had just published an article building on a Sept. 25 El Pais newspaper <a title=\"link to report\" href=\"https:\/\/politica.elpais.com\/politica\/2017\/09\/22\/actualidad\/1506101626_670033.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0that<strong> linked fake news on Catalonia with allegations of Russian influence in the Brexit campaign.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Elcano is part-<strong>funded by the Spanish government <\/strong>and its board\u2019s honorary chairman is King Felipe VI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Milosevich further claims that <strong>the most significant comments spread on Twitter and Facebook came from WikiLeaks editor Julian Assange and government-secrets leaker Edward Snowden,<\/strong> Milosevich said, particularly that the \u201cbanana republic\u201d of Spain used violence to suffocate a democratic vote.<\/p>\n<p>For his Twitter profile photo, Assange is using a\u00a0<a title=\"link to profile\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/julianassange\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">shot<\/a>\u00a0of Spanish riot police, clad in black protective gear, with one of them swinging his baton.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Spanish Government Blames Russian &#8220;Dezinformatsiya&#8221;
