{"id":27736,"date":"2017-11-08T07:30:03","date_gmt":"2017-11-08T12:30:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=27736"},"modified":"2017-11-08T07:30:03","modified_gmt":"2017-11-08T12:30:03","slug":"centrally-planned-uk-generation-scenarios-for-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=27736","title":{"rendered":"Centrally Planned UK Generation Scenarios for 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/euanmearns.com\/centrally-planned-uk-generation-scenarios-for-2030\/\">Centrally Planned UK Generation Scenarios for 2030<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/karl_marx.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"10\" \/>The economies of the European Union have centrally planned energy delivery strategies where the <em><strong>amount<\/strong><\/em> of electricity to be generated from a particular <em><strong>source<\/strong><\/em> by a particular <em><strong>time<\/strong><\/em> is planned in minute detail by legions of civil servants and academics.<\/p>\n<p>This post summarises some of the scenarios for 2030 from The UK Committee on Climate Change and discusses the consequences for the grid, companies and consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Dieter Helm\u2019s recent independent review into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/654902\/Cost_of_Energy_Review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK\u2019s Cost of Energy<\/a>\u00a0(big pdf) provides a stark reminder of the scale of State intervention into the electricity generation sector. Figure 1 (Helm p40) summarises the various State sponsored organisations involved.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/helmregulatio.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/helmregulatio.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"80%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 1<\/strong> 17 State-sponsored organisations involved in the centralised planning and delivery of UK electricity supplies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Helm also reminds us of the Committee on Climate Change (COCC) plan for the UK 2030 (Figure 2) which forms the basis of the analysis presented in this post.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/fifthcarbonbudget.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.euanmearns.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/fifthcarbonbudget.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Figure 2<\/strong> The plan for the fifth carbon budget ~ 2030 (Helm p11) showing scenarios for installed generation capacities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With four scenarios offered, and 12 months\/year to analyse, this presents a total range of 48 monthly scenarios to evaluate.
