It\u2019s the culmination of a two-year effort we engaged in between mid-2014 (when I arrived at Lausanne) and mid-2016 to spell out (<em>a<\/em>) what sustainability really means and (<em>b<\/em>) what the social, cultural and political conditions for the emergence of a genuinely sustainable society are. It\u2019s during this period that we published our article,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairn.info\/revue-de-l-ofce-2016-1-page-91.htm\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong><span class=\"titre\">Vers une \u00e9conomie authentiquement circulaire:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span class=\"sstitre\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairn.info\/revue-de-l-ofce-2016-1-page-91.htm\">R\u00e9flexions sur les fondements d\u2019un indicateur de circularit\u00e9\u201d<\/a><\/strong>(\u201cToward a Genuinely Circular Economy: Reflections on the Foundations of a Circularity Indicator\u201d), in which we first coined the word\u00a0<em>permacircularit\u00e9<\/em>. (In French, we don\u2019t hyphenate it. I\u2019m thinking of soon going over to that spelling convention in English as well \u2013 since the related word \u201cpermaculture\u201d has no hyphen either.)<\/span><span id=\"more-4731\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-68249\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn5-blog.p2pfoundation.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn5-blog.p2pfoundation.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books.jpg 526w, https:\/\/cdn8-blog.p2pfoundation.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/Books-197x300.jpg 197w\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"697\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span class=\"sstitre\">Our basic intuition, which we started out by developing in a series of articles, was that a genuinely sustainable society requires a circular and regenerative economy which, as a result, needs to give up growth as it guiding and regulating principle.
