{"id":27191,"date":"2017-10-24T09:08:46","date_gmt":"2017-10-24T14:08:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=27191"},"modified":"2017-10-24T09:08:46","modified_gmt":"2017-10-24T14:08:46","slug":"100-renewables-wishful-thinking-or-an-imperative-goal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=27191","title":{"rendered":"100% renewables: \u2018wishful thinking\u2019 or an imperative goal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"section section--body section--first\">\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--fullWidth\">\n<figure id=\"0015\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf--layoutFillWidth graf-after--p\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\" data-image-id=\"1*9i_QxJK6FdruvZic6AV18g.jpeg\" data-width=\"1680\" data-height=\"700\" data-scroll=\"native\">\n<h3 id=\"5e4b\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf--leading graf--title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/insurge-intelligence\/100-renewables-wishful-thinking-or-an-imperative-goal-9879a8947d1b\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--h3-strong\">100% renewables: \u2018wishful thinking\u2019 or an imperative goal?<\/strong><\/a><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/2000\/1*9i_QxJK6FdruvZic6AV18g.jpeg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/2000\/1*9i_QxJK6FdruvZic6AV18g.jpeg\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<h4 id=\"6c1f\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--pullquote graf--trailing\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">In this essay, I was provoked to respond to Stan Cox\u2019s widely-shared article <\/span><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/greensocialthought.org\/content\/100-percent-wishful-thinking-green-energy-cornucopia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"http:\/\/greensocialthought.org\/content\/100-percent-wishful-thinking-green-energy-cornucopia\">\u201c100 Percent Wishful Thinking: The Green-Energy Cornucopia\u201d<\/a><span style=\"color: #333333;\">, in which he argues that a transition to 100% renewable energy is neither technically feasible, nor desirable.<\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"section section--body section--last\">\n<div class=\"section-content\">\n<div class=\"section-inner sectionLayout--insetColumn\">\n<p id=\"03f2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It is my contention, in contrast, that a 100 percent global renewable energy transition is, indeed, technically possible in a short time frame (20 to 30 years) with a capacity to supply the same level or <em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">even more energy<\/em> to civilization, than the present infrastructure dominated by fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7dfb\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">However, this outcome is unlikely in our present economic context:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"7e91\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">Insight 1: This renewable energy transition is not likely to bear fruition within the constraints of market capitalism as we know it. Further, a process forward for global demilitarization is a necessary condition to prevent climate catastrophe with its requirement of near future decarbonization of energy supplies.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote id=\"9e73\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--blockquote\"><p><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">Axiom 1: Not only is the Pentagon is the <\/strong><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--blockquote-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2015\/11\/17\/hidden-villain-global-warming-pentagon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/views\/2015\/11\/17\/hidden-villain-global-warming-pentagon\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">world\u2019s single, biggest<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\"> insitutional consumer of fossil fuels, but global military expenditures <\/strong><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--blockquote-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/research\/armament-and-disarmament\/arms-transfers-and-military-spending\/military-expenditure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/research\/armament-and-disarmament\/arms-transfers-and-military-spending\/military-expenditure\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">now approach $2 trillion per year<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"a4c3\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">Cox denies the feasibility of a 100% renewable energy transition, basing his views on very problematic critiques focusing largely on the technical aspects of the Jacobson group studies. Those <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2017\/08\/23\/100-renewable-energy-job-growth-139-nations-detailed-new-stanford-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2017\/08\/23\/100-renewable-energy-job-growth-139-nations-detailed-new-stanford-report\/\">studies<\/a> led by Mark Jacobson of Stanford University recently provoked controversy when their work received <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2017\/06\/16\/1610381114.short\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2017\/06\/16\/1610381114.short\">peer-reviewed criticisms<\/a> from a scientific paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\u200a\u2014\u200athe same esteemed forum which published Jacobson\u2019s original work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b273\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I agree with Cox in his skepticism with regard to the achievability of a robust global 100% renewable transition unfolding in the next few decades\u200a\u2014\u200a<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">but only if fossil capital and its military protectors continue to have a powerful role in determining climate and energy policy especially in the U.S.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>100% renewables: \u2018wishful thinking\u2019 or an imperative goal?
