US Prepares For War: Steps Taken To Put Nuclear Bombers on 24-Hour Alert Status<\/a><\/h3>\n

The United States Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers back on 24-hour ready alert, a status not seen since the Cold War ended back in 1991. The Air Force is said to face this decision due to a changing geopolitical environment.<\/p>\n

It isn\u2019t just\u00a0North Korea\u2019s\u00a0rapidly advancing nuclear arsenal<\/a>\u00a0that has the Air Force planning to \u201cfire up\u201d the long-dormant concrete pads at the ends of this base\u2019s 11,000-foot runway.\u00a0 Those pads are dubbed the \u201cChristmas tree\u201d for their angular markings and will probably soon once again find several B-52s parked on them, laden with nuclear weapons and ready to take off at a moment\u2019s\u00a0notice<\/a>\u00a0partly because of the heightened rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang. But the military is also concerned about\u00a0Russia\u2019s\u00a0increasingly potent and active armed forces<\/a>, according to Defense One<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The long-range bomber can also unleash both<\/a> nuclear and precision-guided conventional ordnance, but the military insists this is for preparations only. \u201cThis is yet one more step in ensuring that we\u2019re prepared,\u201d said General David Goldfein, Air Force chief of staff,\u00a0 in an interview during his six-day tour of Barksdale and other\u00a0U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Air Force bases <\/a>that support the nuclear mission. \u201cI look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we\u2019re prepared going\u00a0forward.<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Goldfein and other senior defense officials wanted it stressed to the public that the alert order had not been given just yet, but the preparations\u00a0were already\u00a0underway in anticipation that it will\u00a0come<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Goldfein also noted that in a world where \u201cwe\u2019ve got folks that are talking openly about [the] use of nuclear weapons,\u201d it\u2019s important to remain alert and think of new ways to be prepared<\/a>.<\/p>\n
