In previous years, voters weighed in on similar initiatives, which were ultimately\u00a0defeated.<\/p>\n<p>The recent ruling came despite both initiatives receiving the required number of signatures to get on the\u00a0ballot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve become experts at collecting signatures!\u201d said Susie Beiersdorfer of the Youngstown Community Bill of Rights\u00a0Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The initiatives were in large part a response to earthquakes caused by fracking waste injections, illegal dumping of fracking waste in a local river, and the expansion of fracking in this area of eastern\u00a0Ohio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-fracking Initiatives in\u00a0Youngstown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting in 2013, the Youngstown Community Bill of Rights Committee has successfully placed a \u201cCommunity Bills of Rights\u201d to outlaw fracking and fracking waste injections on six separate\u00a0ballots.<\/p>\n<p>Each election, the group has been vastly outspent and its initiatives voted down. But it has made gains. In November 2016, its community bill of rights initiative lost by only <a href=\"http:\/\/vote.mahoningcountyoh.gov\/DocumentCenter\/Home\/View\/825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2,279 votes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Citizens are realizing that our government system is fixed,\u201d Beiersdorfer told\u00a0DeSmog.<\/p>\n<p>In response to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vindy.com\/news\/2013\/oct\/25\/mcnally-outraises-kitchen--to-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">being vastly outspent<\/a> on past campaigns, this year the group also proposed a second initiative, the \u201cPeople\u2019s Bill of Rights for Fair Elections and Access to Local Government.\u201d In addition to challenging corporations\u2019 protections under the <span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>Constitution, the bill would ban outside private interests from contributing to local campaigns and limit campaign contributions to $100 for local\u00a0elections.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fossil Fuel Misinformation Helps Quash Community Effort to Ban Fracking in Youngstown, Ohio For the first time since 2013, a group of activists in Youngstown, Ohio, has been told it cannot place an anti-fracking initiative on local ballots, due in part to a misinformation campaign from the fossil fuel\u00a0industry.
