According to analysts from <\/span><u style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ru.scribd.com\/document\/327040893\/Reassessing-the-safety-of-nuclear-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Energy Research &amp; Social Science<\/span><\/a><\/u><span lang=\"en-US\" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\"> (ERSS), <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\"><b>there is<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\"><b> an 80% probability of a \u201cserious accident\u201d at one of Ukraine\u2019s nuclear power plants before the year 2020. <\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\" style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 16px;\">This is due both to the increased burden on the nuclear plants caused by the widespread shutdowns of Ukraine\u2019s thermal power plants (the raw material they consumed \u2013 coal from the Donbass \u2013 is in critically short supply) and also because of the severe physical deterioration of their Soviet-era nuclear equipment and the catastrophic underfunding of this industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"post-area\">\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<div class=\"pf-content\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Should such an incident occur, the EU would not only be faced with the potential environmental consequences, but also \u2013 given the recent introduction of visa-free travel \u2013 a large-scale exodus of Ukrainians out of contaminated areas. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Let\u2019s start by taking a brief tour of the Ukrainian nuclear industry:<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17183 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"382\" data-attachment-id=\"17183\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/2017\/10\/16\/get-ready-for-a-new-chernobyl-in-ukraine\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors.gif\" data-orig-size=\"504,382\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"map-ukraine-nuke-reactors\" data-image-description=\"\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors-300x227.gif\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/orientalreview.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/map-ukraine-nuke-reactors.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Ukraine currently has<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b> four operating nuclear power plants<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">: the <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zaporizhia_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Zaporizhia<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/u><span lang=\"en-US\"> (the largest in Europe, with six reactors and a combined power output of 6,000 MW), the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rivne_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Rivne<\/b><\/span><\/u><\/a><b> <\/b><span lang=\"en-US\">(four reactors and a combined power output of 2,880 MW), the <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Khmelnitskiy_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>Khmelnitskiy<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/u><span lang=\"en-US\"> (two reactors and a combined power output of 2,000 MW), and the <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Ukraine_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>South Ukraine<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/u><b> <\/b><span lang=\"en-US\">(three reactors and a combined power output of 3,000 MW):<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">The<\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chernobyl_Nuclear_Power_Plant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><b> Chernobyl<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/u><span lang=\"en-US\"> plant with its four reactors was finally shut down for good in 2000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span lang=\"en-US\">Of the 15 nuclear reactors currently operating in Ukraine, 12 were brought online during the Soviet era, prior to 1990. All of them rely on the classic type of <\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/VVER\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"en-US\">VVER nuclear reactors<\/span><\/a><\/u><span lang=\"en-US\"> that were designed during the 1960s and 1970s at the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow. Those reactors should have a maximum life expectancy of 30 years.
