It was lying in the middle of a big grass field with its legs in the air. I wasn\u2019t <span id=\"E74\">surprised;<\/span><span id=\"E75\"> those fields are rented by a farmer <\/span><span id=\"E76\">who can\u2019t afford<\/span><span id=\"E77\"> to run his business in the way<\/span><span id=\"E78\"> <\/span><span id=\"E79\">modern farming demands. He doesn\u2019t own enough land to scale up his production by borrowing against its value. The result is not too many beasts on the farm<\/span><span id=\"E80\">,<\/span><span id=\"E81\">but too few: <\/span><span id=\"E82\">in this case <\/span><span id=\"E83\">six<\/span><span id=\"E84\"> scraggy<\/span><span id=\"E85\"> ewes roaming 15 acres.<\/span><span id=\"E86\"> As I walked by<\/span><span id=\"E87\">,<\/span><span id=\"E88\"> the dead <\/span><span id=\"E89\">one <\/span><span id=\"E90\">waved her legs. Alive then, but stuck on her back<\/span><span id=\"E91\"> by her weight of wool<\/span><span id=\"E92\">. I trudged <\/span><span id=\"E93\">across <\/span><span id=\"E94\">to her, put my foot on her side and pushed her over<\/span><span id=\"E95\"> away from me<\/span><span id=\"E96\">. She scrambled to her feet and ran off, fleece bouncing<\/span><span id=\"E97\">, bleating confusedly<\/span><span id=\"E98\">. If I hadn\u2019t rescued her she probably would have died. No one would have noticed in time because no one passes this way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E100\"><span id=\"E101\">For thousands of years, the English countryside has never been so empty<\/span><span id=\"E102\"> of people and animals<\/span><span id=\"E103\"> as it is now<\/span><span id=\"E104\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E106\"><span id=\"E107\">T<\/span><span id=\"E108\">he<\/span><span id=\"E109\"> part of West Dorset<\/span><span id=\"E110\"> where I live<\/span><span id=\"E111\"> was <\/span><span id=\"E112\">once <\/span><span id=\"E113\">a <\/span><span id=\"E114\">busy <\/span><span id=\"E115\">network of small farmsteads, most with fewer than 100 acres, keeping Red Devon cattle f<\/span><span id=\"E116\">or meat and milk. Today, the<\/span><span id=\"E117\"> old farm <\/span><span id=\"E118\">names <\/span><span id=\"E119\">on the Ordnance Survey map <\/span><span id=\"E120\">are a roll<\/span><span id=\"E121\"> call<\/span><span id=\"E122\"> of lost activity: Prime,<\/span><span id=\"E123\"> <\/span><span id=\"E125\">Oselhay<\/span><span id=\"E127\">, <\/span><span id=\"E129\">Middlebrook<\/span><span id=\"E131\">, <\/span><span id=\"E133\">Taphouse<\/span><span id=\"E135\">, Lower <\/span><span id=\"E136\">Park, <\/span><span id=\"E138\">Purcombe<\/span><span id=\"E140\">, <\/span><span id=\"E141\">and Higher<\/span><span id=\"E142\"> <\/span><span id=\"E144\">Sminhay<\/span><span id=\"E146\">. Their land has been sold and consolidated into bigger <\/span><span id=\"E147\">agricultural <\/span><span id=\"E148\">landholdings. Some of the farmhouses are second homes or holiday lets. Many more settlements have simply disappeared. The <\/span><span id=\"E149\">186<\/span><span id=\"E150\">1 census lists<\/span><span id=\"E151\"> <\/span><span id=\"E153\">Dodseye<\/span><span id=\"E155\">, <\/span><span id=\"E157\">Brickhouse<\/span><span id=\"E159\">, Poor House, <\/span><span id=\"E161\">Froghouse<\/span><span id=\"E163\"> and <\/span><span id=\"E165\">Duckpool<\/span><span id=\"E167\"> \u2013 all<\/span><span id=\"E168\"> gone<\/span><span id=\"E169\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE EMPTY COUNTRYSIDE I thought the sheep was dead.
