{"id":26445,"date":"2017-10-03T17:08:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-03T22:08:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=26445"},"modified":"2017-10-03T17:08:16","modified_gmt":"2017-10-03T22:08:16","slug":"scotland-to-permanently-ban-fracking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=26445","title":{"rendered":"Scotland To Permanently Ban Fracking"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Crude-Oil\/Scotland-To-Permanently-Ban-Fracking.html\">Scotland To Permanently Ban Fracking<\/a><\/h3>\n<picture><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"singleArticle__articleImage\" title=\"Oil\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.oilprice.com\/a\/img\/content\/article\/718x300\/2036dbb4d82828002299d406645ae632.jpg\" alt=\"Oil\" \/><\/picture>\n<div id=\"article-content\" class=\"wysiwyg clear\">\n<p>The Scottish government said on Tuesday that it wants to extend a current moratorium on fracking into a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-41483642\">permanent full ban<\/a>, with a final vote likely taking place at the Scottish Parliament later this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can confirm that the decision of the Scottish Government is that we will not support the development of unconventional oil and gas in Scotland,\u201d Scotland\u2019s Energy Minister Paul Wheelhouse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/news\/environment\/scottish-government-announce-ban-on-fracking-1-4576872\">told<\/a> the Scottish Parliament today.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2015, the Scottish Government put in place a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.scot\/Publications\/2017\/10\/9813\">moratorium<\/a> on granting consents for unconventional oil and gas developments in Scotland. Back then, the government promised to undertake further research on potential impacts before holding a full public consultation. The consultation ran from January 31 to May 31, 2017, and received more than 60,000 responses, the government said.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Minister Wheelhouse told the Parliament that 99 percent of respondents in the consultation were against fracking. The ministers have a \u201cmoral responsibility\u201d to tackle climate change, he noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFracking cannot, and will not take place in Scotland,\u201d Wheelhouse <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heraldscotland.com\/news\/homenews\/15573072.Scottish_Government_announces_fracking_ban\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NicolaSturgeon\/status\/915212587503177728\">tweeted<\/a> that \u201cScottish government backs ban on fracking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Just yesterday, The Scotsman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/news\/environment\/pressure-mounts-on-snp-to-confirm-total-ban-on-fracking-1-4575357\">reported<\/a> that ministers of the SNP party of government had been warned by other parties that a failure to ban fracking would be a \u201cbetrayal\u201d to climate change commitments Scotland has made.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour Party, Greens, and Liberal Democrats are all opposing fracking and supporting a ban, so they would likely support the Scottish government in a Parliament vote on banning fracking.<\/p>\n<p>Friends of the Earth Scotland <a href=\"https:\/\/foe.scot\/scotland-ban-fracking\/\">welcomed<\/a> the decision to ban fracking, which they described as a \u201ctruly momentous win for the anti-fracking movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A British Geological Survey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/estimates-of-shale-gas-and-oil-in-scotland-published\">report<\/a> from 2014 said that there were \u201cmodest\u201d shale reserves in Scotland. The estimate of shale gas in place is 80 trillion cubic feet, and the central estimate for shale oil in place is 6 billion barrels of oil.
