{"id":25525,"date":"2017-09-12T16:03:42","date_gmt":"2017-09-12T21:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25525"},"modified":"2017-09-12T16:03:42","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T21:03:42","slug":"tribalism-marches-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25525","title":{"rendered":"Tribalism Marches On!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/buchanan.org\/blog\/tribalism-marches-on-127639\">Tribalism Marches On!<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently, a columnist-friend, Matt Kenney, sent me a 25-year-old newspaper with his chiding that my column had been given better play.<\/p>\n<p>Both had run in The Orange County Register on June 30, 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there no room for new nations in the New World Order?\u201d was my title, and the column began:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn turning a stone face toward embattled Slovenia and Croatia, President Bush and Secretary of State James Baker have not only put America\u2019s chips on the wrong horse. They have bet on a losing horse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan the U.S. Government seriously believe that a Yugoslavia of such disparate peoples, all of whom wish greater freedom, most of whose republics wish to be free of Belgrade, is a viable nation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The State Department had denounced \u201cthese unilateral steps by Croatia and Slovenia\u201d to break free: \u201cAs Secretary Baker made clear last Friday, we will neither encourage nor reward secession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Croatia and Slovenia are today free and members of NATO.<\/p>\n<p>A month later in 1991, George H. W. Bush, in what Bill Safire dubbed his \u201cChicken Kiev\u201d speech, warned that Ukraine\u2019s desire to break free of Moscow manifested a \u201csuicidal nationalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Today, Ukraine is independent and the Bush-GOP establishment wants to send weapons to Kiev to fight pro-Russia secessionists.<\/p>\n<p>Have something to say about this column?<br \/>\nVisit Pat&#8217;s FaceBook page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PatrickJosephBuchanan\" rel=\"nofollow\">and post your comments\u2026.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As nationalism tore apart Yugoslavia and the USSR in the 1990s, and surged to propel British secession from the EU and Donald Trump\u2019s triumph in 2016, that primal force appears on the march again.<\/p>\n<p>Wrote The Wall Street Journal Monday:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban barely mentions his political rivals as he campaigns for a fourth term.
