{"id":25472,"date":"2017-09-11T06:51:11","date_gmt":"2017-09-11T11:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25472"},"modified":"2017-09-11T06:51:11","modified_gmt":"2017-09-11T11:51:11","slug":"taking-aim-at-wikileaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25472","title":{"rendered":"Taking Aim at Wikileaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"headline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2017\/09\/11\/taking-aim-at-wikileaks\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Taking Aim at Wikileaks<\/a><\/h3>\n<div class=\"post_content\">\n<p>Various scribbles have started to pepper the conversation started by the adventurous Mike Pompeo after he branded WikiLeaks a hostile intelligence agency before the Center for Strategic and International Studies.\u00a0 (This would have generated a wry smile of content from Julian Assange.)<\/p>\n<p>The words of the Central Intelligence Agency chief are worth retelling in their mind distorting wonder: \u201cIt\u2019s time to call out WikiLeaks for what it is, a non-state hostile intelligence service, often abetted by state actors like Russia.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2017\/09\/11\/taking-aim-at-wikileaks\/#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Individuals like Assange and Edward Snowden receive the necessary special treatment as history\u2019s great turncoats: \u201cAs long as they make a splash, they care nothing about the lives they put at risk or the damage they cause to national security.\u201d Celebrity disrupters, dangerous irritants, narcissists in pursuit of personal glory.<\/p>\n<p>This wretchedly desperate sentiment \u2013 for its nothing else \u2013 has wound its way into Congressional ponderings.\u00a0 Prior to the August District Work Period, the Senate Intelligence Committee took up Pompeo\u2019s views, slotting into the Senate Intelligence Authorization Act (SB 1761) some suggestive wording:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt is the sense of Congress that WikiLeaks and the senior leadership of WikiLeaks resembles a non-state\u00a0 hostile intelligence service often abetted by state actors and should be treated as such a service by the United States.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2017\/09\/11\/taking-aim-at-wikileaks\/#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This inventive provision passed 14-1, the only demurral coming from Democrat Ron Wyden of Oregon.\u00a0 To <em>The Hill<\/em>, Wyden explained that \u201cthe use of the novel phrase \u2018non-state intelligence service\u2019 may have legal, constitutional, and policy implications, particularly should it be applied to journalists inquiring about secrets.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2017\/09\/11\/taking-aim-at-wikileaks\/#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> And what, he feared, of the \u201cunstated course of action\u201d against those sinister non-state hostile intelligence services?<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taking Aim at Wikileaks Various scribbles have started to pepper the conversation started by the adventurous Mike Pompeo after he branded WikiLeaks a hostile intelligence agency before the Center for Strategic and International Studies.\u00a0 (This would have generated a wry smile of content from Julian Assange.)
