Before Our Eyes<\/a><\/h3>\n

Climate breakdown<\/a>, as George Monbiot calls it,\u00a0is happening before our eyes at the same time the science on climate change grows stronger and has wider acceptance. Hurricane Harvey, which struck at the center of the petroleum industry \u2013 the heart of climate denialism \u2013 provided a glimpse of the new normal of climate crisis-induced events. In Asia, this week the\u00a0climate message was even stronger<\/a>\u00a0where at least 1,200 people died and 41 million were impacted. By 2050,\u00a0one billion people could be displaced<\/a>\u00a0by climate crises.<\/p>\n

Climate disasters demonstrate the immense failure of government at all levels. The world has known about the likely disastrous impacts of climate change for decades. Next year will be the thirtieth\u00a0anniversary of\u00a0the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a>\u00a0(IPCC), which\u00a0 operates under the auspices of the United Nations and was founded in 1988. The IPCC published the first of five reports in 1990. Thousands of scientists and other experts write and review the reports and 120 countries participate in the process. The most common surprises in successive reports are\u00a0more rapid temperature increases<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0greater impacts<\/a>\u00a0than scientists had predicted.<\/p>\n

We Can No Longer Ignore the Science and the Evidence Before Us<\/strong><\/p>\n

The science on climate change has become extremely strong as the\u00a0final draft of the U.S. Global Change Research Program\u2019s Climate Science Special Report<\/a>\u00a0showed.\u00a0The\u00a0document was leaked<\/a>\u00a0last month because scientists feared the Trump administration would amend, suppress or destroy it. The report describes overwhelming evidence of man-made climate change impacting us\u00a0right now and the urgent need to get to zero net carbon emissions.<\/p>\n
