{"id":25206,"date":"2017-09-05T06:22:44","date_gmt":"2017-09-05T11:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25206"},"modified":"2017-09-05T06:23:16","modified_gmt":"2017-09-05T11:23:16","slug":"25206","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=25206","title":{"rendered":"Trump Quietly Nominates Mass Surveillance Advocate To \u201cProtect\u201d Your Privacy Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"entry-header clearfix\">\n<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/2017\/09\/trump-quietly-nominates-mass-surveillance-advocate-protect-privacy-rights.html\">Trump Quietly Nominates Mass Surveillance Advocate To \u201cProtect\u201d Your Privacy Rights<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/17554694_1649980595030549_1648136858_n.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-160106\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-160106 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/17554694_1649980595030549_1648136858_n.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 728px) 100vw, 728px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/17554694_1649980595030549_1648136858_n.jpg 728w, http:\/\/www.activistpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/17554694_1649980595030549_1648136858_n-300x157.jpg 300w\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<p>Though outrage over mass surveillance swept the United States after Edward Snowden\u2019s revelations in 2013, there is little discussion of these invasive practices just four years later.<\/p>\n<p>This apathy comes despite former President Barack Obama\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/12\/us\/politics\/nsa-gets-more-latitude-to-share-intercepted-communications.html\">move<\/a>\u00a0to expand to information sharing between agencies just days before Trump took office and after the Trump administration\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-intelligence\/white-house-intel-chiefs-want-to-make-digital-spying-law-permanent-idUSKBN18Y21E?il=0\">signaled<\/a>\u00a0its desire to continue widespread surveillance.<\/p>\n<p>Amid this lack of attention toward the NSA, the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2017\/08\/25\/president-donald-j-trump-announces-intent-nominate-personnel-key\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently<\/a>\u00a0nominated\u00a0a staunch advocate of mass surveillance to chair one of the few barriers standing between intrusive government spying and the American people\u2019s privacy. The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB) was created in 2004 at the recommendation of the 9\/11 Commission and was intended \u201cto help the executive branch balance national security priorities with individual rights,\u201d the\u00a0Intercept\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2017\/03\/03\/the-governments-privacy-watchdog-is-basically-dead-emails-reveal\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPCLOB is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pclob.gov\/library\/42USC2000ee-PCLOB_Enabling_Statute.pdf\">supposed<\/a>\u00a0to have five members, no more than three of whom come from the same political party; to employ a full-time chairperson; to have regular access to the 17 intelligence agencies; and to publish unclassified versions of its evaluations of U.S. espionage powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, as of March of this year, the board was down to just one part-time member, and this lack of personnel rendered it largely impotent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut with just one part-time board member left, after another member\u2019s term ended last week, the agency has very few formal powers to police the so-called \u2018deep state\u2019 until President Trump nominates a new board,\u201d the<em>\u00a0Intercept\u00a0<\/em>reported pursuant to emails they obtained regarding the remaining single member.<\/p>\n<p>Though the board had been deteriorating before Trump became president, it may now be further undermined as a result of his recent appointment.<\/p>\n<p>On August 25, the president\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/2017\/08\/25\/president-donald-j-trump-announces-intent-nominate-personnel-key\">announced<\/a>\u00a0his nomination of Adam I. Klein to chair the PCLOB.
