The French company said the situation at the plant \u201c<strong>has become serious<\/strong>\u201d and said that it is working with the Department of Homeland Security and the State of Texas to set up a command post in a suitable location near our site.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d2496.137024911354!2d-95.02307136631029!3d29.948874094123028!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x863f566042fe696b%3A0x5eaf68780e6d3a23!2sArkema+Inc.!5e1!3m2!1sen!2sus!4v1504042319544\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The plant, which produces explosive organic peroxides and ammonia, was hit by more than 40 inches of rain and has been heavily flooded, running without electricity since Sunday. The plant was closed since Friday but has had a skeleton staff of about a dozen in place. Following the flood surge, the plant&#8217;s back-up generators also failed. <strong>The threat emerged once the company could no longer maintain refrigeration for chemicals located on site, which have to be stored at low temperatures. <\/strong>The plant lost cooling when backup generators were flooded and then workers transferred products from the warehouses into diesel-powered refrigerated containers.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday afternoon, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arkema-americas.com\/en\/social-responsibility\/incident-news\/\">the company released a statement <\/a>which admitted that &#8220;refrigeration on some of our back-up product storage containers has been compromised due to extremely high water, which is unprecedented in the Crosby area.\u00a0 We are monitoring the temperature of each refrigeration container remotely.&#8221; It then warned that \u201cwhile we do not believe there is any imminent danger, the potential for a chemical reaction leading to a fire and\/or explosion within the site confines is real.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One day later, and with the torrential rains finally over, has the situation at the giant peroxide chemical plant stabilized?
