{"id":24790,"date":"2017-08-22T07:22:07","date_gmt":"2017-08-22T12:22:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=24790"},"modified":"2017-08-22T07:22:07","modified_gmt":"2017-08-22T12:22:07","slug":"are-we-fiddling-while-rome-burns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=24790","title":{"rendered":"Are We Fiddling While Rome Burns?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"post-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/charleshughsmith.blogspot.com\/2017\/08\/are-we-fiddling-while-rome-burns.html\">Are We Fiddling While Rome Burns?<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"post-6970114953905623308\" class=\"post-body\">\n<div><i>Solutions abound, but they require the retirement of obsolete systems that defend entrenched interests and soul-crushing inequalities.<\/i><\/div>\n<div><b>It turns out Nero wasn&#8217;t fiddling as Rome burned&#8211;he was 60 km away at the time.<\/b>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/history-famous-people\/did-nero-really-fiddle-while-rome-burned-001919\" target=\"resource\">Did Nero Really Fiddle While Rome Burned?<\/a><\/div>\n<div>The story has become short-hand for making light of a catastrophe, either out of self-interest (one theory had Nero clearing a site he desired for a palace with the fire) or out of a mad detachment from reality.<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.oftwominds.com\/photos2017\/rome-fire.jpg\" width=\"545\" align=\"center\" border=\"0\" \/><\/div>\n<div><b>Are we fiddling while Rome burns? I would say yes&#8211;because we&#8217;re not solving any of the structural problems that are dooming the status quo.<\/b>\u00a0Instead, we&#8217;re allowing a corrupt, corporate mainstream media to distract us with fake &#8220;Russians hacked our election&#8221; hysteria, false &#8220;cultural war&#8221; mania, and a laughably Orwellian frenzy over\u00a0<i>fake news<\/i>\u00a0which magically avoids mentioning the\u00a0<i>propaganda narratives<\/i>pushed 24\/7 by the mainstream media&#8211;narratives that are the acme of fake news.<\/div>\n<div>The media is only half the problem, of course; the audience doesn&#8217;t want to hear about structural problems that can only be fixed by disrupting the status quo. If we don&#8217;t accept that the financial system we inhabit is imploding, maybe all the problems will go away.<\/div>\n<div>The system is coughing up blood and we still want to believe it is &#8220;recovering&#8221; from a cold.<\/div>\n<div><b>Here&#8217;s a short list of structural problems we should be tackling:<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><b>1. Soaring inequality and the institutionalization of economic privilege.<\/b>Systemic economic privilege doesn&#8217;t exist in a vacuum&#8211;it&#8217;s enforced by a centralized hierarchy, a dynamic I describe in my book\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B01MSP2SXM\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B01MSP2SXM&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=charleshughsm-20&amp;linkId=e45dbb20ba66e69c33a3a26772391278\" target=\"resource\">Inequality and the Collapse of Privilege<\/a>. Systemic inequality doesn&#8217;t just undermine the economy&#8211;it also undermines the social and political orders.<\/div>\n<div><b>2.
