Putin Says Crimea Sacred, Attacks U.S., EU Over Ukraine – Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n

President\u00a0Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u00a0attacked the U.S and\u00a0Europe<\/a>\u00a0for backing\u00a0Ukraine<\/a>and said that Crimea, which the Kremlin annexed from Ukraine in March, has \u201csacred meaning\u201d as\u00a0Russia<\/a>\u2019s \u201cJerusalem<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crimea\u2019s \u201cterritory is strategically important\u201d and for Russia it\u2019s \u201clike theTemple Mount<\/a>\u00a0in Jerusalem\u201d is for Muslims and Jews, Putin said in his annual address to parliament in Moscow today. The Russian leader said he\u2019s not surprised by the conflict in Ukraine given what he termed \u201cthe coup and violent takeover of power\u201d in Kiev in February.<\/p>\n

Ukraine is battling pro-Russian separatists in a conflict in its easternmost regions that\u2019s killed more than 4,300 people and displaced 500,000 this year. The EU and U.S. have imposed sanctions on Russia, limiting access to\u00a0capital markets<\/a>\u00a0for some Russian banks and companies, and blacklisting officials involved in the conflict.<\/p>\n
