(Ryan Remiorz\/Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div class=\"story-body\" role=\"main\" aria-labelledby=\"storyhead\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>Foonie\u00a0doesn&#8217;t really work, so\u00a0Canadians will have to put on their thinking caps to figure out a name for the $5 coin.<\/p>\n<p>As the loonie turns 30 this week, painful though it may be, we must inevitably begin to prepare ourselves to say goodbye to our blue Wilfrids.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an inside scoop\u00a0from the Bank of Canada; officially there is no plan to kill the bill.<\/p>\n<p>But there is evidence it is already on the minds of Canadians: The Royal Canadian Mint includes a query\u00a0about a $5 coin in its list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mint.ca\/store\/mint\/customer-service\/faq-1100010#currency3\">frequently asked questions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Cost-saving measure&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The decision to issue a new circulation coin is the responsibility of the Canadian government,&#8221; says the mint&#8217;s answer to that FAQ. &#8220;There are currently no plans to make $5 coins or discontinue the $5 bill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However the final line of the FAQ could be taken as\u00a0a hint: &#8220;The $2 coin was introduced as a cost-saving measure in 1996.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it has been more that 20 years since the last time a bill was replaced by a money-saving\u00a0coin.<\/p>\n<p>You can see why the\u00a0mint would want to soften us up in advance.<\/p>\n<div class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.4178044.1498501198!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.png_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/canadian-five-from-bank-of-canada-website.png\" alt=\"Canadian five from Bank of Canada website\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Get ready to say goodbye to Wilfrid Laurier, Canada&#8217;s seventh prime minister, though the tough new polymer bills may give him more staying power than the paper ones and twos.
