They are insisting that Qatar meet these demands within ten days or face unspecified further action.The list of demands includes Qatar shutting down<i> Al-Jazeera<\/i> and its affiliate stations; shutting down other news outlets that Qatar funds, including <i>Middle East Eye<\/i>; curbing diplomatic ties with Iran and expelling members of Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guard; terminating the Turkish military presence in Qatar; consenting to monthly audits for the first year following acceptance of the demands, and aligning itself entirely with the other Gulf and Arab countries militarily, politically, socially, and economically \u2013 to name but a few.<\/p>\n<p>The most ludicrous of the demands is that Qatar must end its interference in sovereign countries\u2019 internal affairs. Qatar <i>does<\/i> interfere in a number of countries, including<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/giorgio-cafiero\/the-uae-and-qatar-wage-a-_b_8801602.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Libya<\/a>and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-gulf-qatar-syria-idUSKBN19517O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Syria<\/a>, but as the German Foreign Minister<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-gulf-qatar-germany-idUSKBN19H2A3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> explained<\/a>, this list of demands directly challenges Qatar\u2019s sovereignty. Who is interfering with whose sovereignty, exactly?<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\">\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div id=\"j4j1f8pgjbxn2t\" class=\"ad-tag\" data-ad-name=\"728x90_Responsive_300x250\" data-ad-size=\"auto\" data-ad-processed=\"1\" data-google-query-id=\"COnVlqSV5NQCFRqtUQod5U0IcQ\" data-ad-imp=\"j4j1fbndcan8n0\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/1966186\/Pub_theantimedia.org_300x250_4_0__container__\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Unsurprisingly, Qatar has<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/06\/qatar-confirms-receipt-saudi-led-bloc-demands-170623214047175.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> dismissed<\/a> the list of demands as neither reasonable nor actionable. Surely, the Saudi-led anti-Qatar alliance is aware of this. It would be tantamount to asking Great Britain to shut down the <i>BBC<\/i> and expel American troops \u2013 it just wouldn\u2019t happen. All of the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecanary.co\/2016\/05\/06\/the-abysmal-local-elections-coverage-shows-the-bbc-has-moved-beyond-bias-to-pure-propaganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">major newspapers are complicit<\/a> in running state-sanctioned propaganda, and singling <i>Al-Jazeera<\/i> out is hardly fair or practical.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>In that context, Saudi Arabia and its friends have given Qatar a list of demands they cannot conceivably meet and imposed a ten-day deadline to concede or face unspecified further action. Qatar was essentially doomed from the start of this rift, and it\u2019s only just beginning.
