Smith)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This was done, the source said, to keep the Syrian government\u2019s army and its allied Russian air force occupied so that the U.S. and its Kurdish allies could continue dividing northern Syria, establishing a zone-of-influence throughout the lands they recapture from the Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p>Concurrent with this was a similar effort in the southeast, where U.S. and Jordanian backed forces have been battling ISIS while attempting to establish control over the border with Iraq. The strategy was to use the fight against ISIS <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/will-america-partition-syria\/\">as a pretext<\/a> for establishing <a href=\"http:\/\/undergroundreports.blogspot.com\/2017\/04\/the-purpose-of-isis-pt-5.html\">a de-facto occupation<\/a> of Syrian territory, where in the Kurdish-held regions the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theamericanconservative.com\/articles\/will-america-partition-syria\/\">has already established<\/a>multiple military bases and airfields.<\/p>\n<p>A major motivation behind Russia\u2019s push to establish de-escalation zones, now implemented after a deal was reached with Iran and Turkey, was <a href=\"https:\/\/elijahjm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/07\/us-and-russia-compete-in-syria-on-reducing-escalation-and-safe-zones\/\">to free up<\/a> the Syrian army and Russian air force to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moonofalabama.org\/2017\/05\/syria-the-new-government-plans-for-moving-east.html\">launch operations<\/a> eastward against ISIS and counter the US efforts.<\/p>\n<p>After the agreement came into effect the Syrian army <a href=\"https:\/\/elijahjm.wordpress.com\/2017\/05\/11\/the-us-russia-race-in-syria-towards-a-military-confrontation\/\">began operations<\/a> aimed at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasdarnews.com\/article\/syrian-army-advances-along-damascus-baghdad-highway-first-time-years\/\">reaching the Iraqi border<\/a> at the al-Tanaf crossing along the Damascus-Baghdad highway and to recapture the ISIS-stronghold of Deir Ezzor further north.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Trump Escalates Syrian Proxy War At the start of the Trump presidency, it looked like the U.S. covert \u201cregime change\u201d war in Syria might be ending, but it has returned, zombie-like, in a slightly different form, reports Steven Chovanec.
