In a TED Talk from October 2016, strategic consultant Ari Wallach offered three ways people can develop long-term plans \u2013 thinking ten or 20 years out, instead of just six months or only a few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/permaculturenews.org\/2015\/05\/09\/degrowth-sustainability-and-tackling-global-inequalities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Short-termism<\/a>, for many reasons, has pervaded every nook and cranny of our reality,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we want to move forward into a different future than the one we have right now \u2026 there\u2019s some more we can do. But my argument is that unless we shift our mental models and our mental maps on how we think about the short, it\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-1\">\n<div class=\"g-single a-26\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_38926\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">Through the practice of what Wallach has termed <strong>\u201clongpath,\u201d<\/strong> individuals will be able to more effectively <a href=\"http:\/\/permaculturenews.org\/2016\/10\/05\/debate-future-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plan for the future<\/a> by employing three different ways of thinking \u2013 for each major decision they make.<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>TRANSGENERATIONAL THINKING<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"googlepublisherpluginad\"><\/div>\n<p>Rather than using a single lifetime as a unit of measurement for planning, Wallach promotes the idea of making decisions while taking into account the impact your choices will make on future generations \u2013 and encouraging them to engage in that process with you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat it does is it connects them here in the present, but it also \u2013 and this is the crux of transgenerational thinking ethics \u2013 it sets them up to how they\u2019re going to interact with their kids and their kids and their kids,\u201d Wallach said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2RfB5OaDIwY?feature=oembed\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2RfB5OaDIwY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Via Ted-Ed on Youtube.<\/a><\/center><strong>FUTURES THINKING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This step involves considering all kinds of potential future possibilities \u2013 and reflecting on the different kinds of solutions that could be employed to address them.
