The Airwars.org<\/a>\u00a0U.K.-based monitoring group reports that 41 U.S-led air strikes<\/a> targeting ISIS in Iraq and Syria\u00a0killed at least 296 civilians<\/a>\u00a0during the week after the chemical weapons incident\u00a0on April 4.\u00a0U.S. cruise missiles reportedly killed\u00a0another nine civilians<\/a>\u00a0in villages near the Shayrat\u00a0airbase that was targeted on April 7th.<\/p>\n

But the fragmentary reports compiled by\u00a0Airwars.org<\/em>\u00a0can\u00a0only reveal a fraction of the true numbers of civilians killed by U.S. and allied bombing in Iraq and Syria.\u00a0These are only the minimum numbers of civilians\u00a0killed\u00a0in 41 of the 178 air strikes reported <\/a>by the U.S military that week.<\/p>\n

In other war zones, when such compilations of \u201cpassive\u201d reports have been followed up by more comprehensive, scientific mortality studies, the true number of civilians killed has proved to be between 5 and 20 times higher than numbers previously reported\u00a0by \u201cpassive\u201d methods.\u00a0[For a fuller discussion of the differences between passive reporting of civilian deaths and actual estimates based on scientific mortality studies, see Consortiumnews.com\u2019s\u00a0\u201cPlaying Games With War Deaths.\u201d<\/a>]<\/p>\n

So, based on the fragmentary nature of passive reporting of civilian deaths and the ratios to actual deaths uncovered by more comprehensive studies in other war zones (such as Rwanda, Guatemala, D.R. Congo and U.S.-occupied Iraq), it is likely that\u00a0U.S.-led air strikes\u00a0killed at least 1,500 innocent civilians in just this one week, or conceivably as many as\u00a06,000.<\/p>\n
