(Jim Best\/University of Illinois)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap8 story-bodywrapper sclt-storybody\">\n<div id=\"sharecount_gig_containerParent\" class=\"story-middle col2\">\n<div id=\"sharecount\" class=\"sclt-share\">\n<div id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1492472590658_13\" class=\"gig-bar-container gig-share-bar-container\">Climate change has caused the massive Kaskawulsh Glacier in the Yukon to retreat\u00a0so much that its meltwater abruptly switched\u00a0direction, in the first documented case of &#8220;river piracy&#8221; in modern times.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-content\">\n<p>Instead of flowing into\u00a0the Slims River and then north to the Bering Sea, the water has changed course and now flows south toward the Kaskawulsh River, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean, scientists have found.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as stream capture, river piracy is a term used to describe a geologic phenomenon where a stream or river is diverted toward another body of water.\u00a0It&#8217;s usually caused by a dramatic tectonic event, such as a landslide or glacial dam collapse.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was the first event we could find where river piracy occurred right under our noses and due to contemporary climate change,&#8221; said Dan Shugar, a geoscientist at the University of Washington Tacoma and lead author of a study published Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience.<\/p>\n<div class=\"figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.3639693.1466121042!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.png_gen\/derivatives\/original_620\/kaskawulsh-glacier-map.png\" alt=\"Kaskawulsh glacier map\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Yukon&#8217;s Kaskawulsh glacier in Kluane National Park.
