For even more, this yearning for simplicity is about cultivating an appreciation for a life with less \u201cstuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"g g-1\">\n<div class=\"g-single a-17\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_36120\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\u201cWe bought into the media notion that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/permaculturenews.org\/2012\/04\/23\/personal-responsibility-and-causes-for-consumerism\/\" target=\"_blank\">money buys happiness<\/a>,\u201d said Duane Elgin, who wrote a book about the benefits of minimalism and simplicity. \u201cWe really, really tried that for couple of generations, and it didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"googlepublisherpluginad\"><\/div>\n<p>On average,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tai.org.au\/documents\/dp_fulltext\/DP77.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Australian households<\/a>\u00a0annually spend more than $1,226 on things that will never be used \u2013 and individually, each of us produces more than half a ton of waste each year. Not only is this unhealthy on a personal level, but it\u2019s damaging our environment \u2013 leading more young people to search for ways to consume less.<\/p>\n<p>Renting or buying smaller homes, using renewable energy sources, eating seasonally and cooking at home, and choosing to take public transportation or car-sharing networks instead of purchasing a personal vehicle are some of the ways people are starting to shift to a more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/permaculturenews.org\/2017\/02\/14\/definition-sustainable-permaculture\/\" target=\"_blank\">sustainable<\/a>, minimalist lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always packed as lightly as possible, and found it exhilarating to get by with just a small carry-on bag,\u201d said Francine Jay, an author and blogger who has been living minimally for more than a decade. \u201cI thought, wow, if it feels this great to travel lightly, how amazing would it be to live this way? I wanted to have that same feeling of freedom in my everyday life, so I decided to get rid of all my excess possessions and live with just the essentials.
