{"id":23062,"date":"2017-03-03T13:06:16","date_gmt":"2017-03-03T18:06:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=23062"},"modified":"2017-03-03T13:14:30","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T18:14:30","slug":"production-rig-count-surge-as-exxon-bets-big-on-u-s-shale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=23062","title":{"rendered":"Production, Rig Count Surge As Exxon Bets Big On U.S. Shale"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2017-03-03\/production-rig-count-surge-exxon-bets-big-us-shale#comment-9121949\">Production, Rig Count Surge As Exxon Bets Big On U.S. Shale<\/a><\/h3>\n<section class=\"messages-holder\"><\/section>\n<div class=\"tabs\"><\/div>\n<section class=\"node node-type-story node-full node-nid-589394\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>US oil rig counts rose for the7th straight week (up 7 to 609) to the\u00a0<strong>highest level since October 2015.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With production surging back above 9mm b\/d &#8211; the highest in a year &#8211; the trend in the rig count implies considerably more production to come&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/02\/27\/20170303_permian2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/02\/27\/20170303_permian2_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s all in the Permian&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/02\/27\/20170303_permian1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2017\/02\/27\/20170303_permian1_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>And with rig counts rising (in the Permian), production shows no signs of slowing, as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oilprice.com\/Energy\/Energy-General\/Exxon-Betting-Big-On-US-Shale.html\">OilPrice.com&#8217;s Nick Cunningham notes,<\/a>\u00a0<strong>ExxonMobil\u2019s new CEO Darren Woods announced a dramatic shift towards shale drilling this week, a new strategy that will prioritize drilling thousands of smaller wells while reducing spending on the massive projects that the oil major has long been accustomed to pursuing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Woods gave a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ir.exxonmobil.com\/phoenix.zhtml?c=115024&amp;p=irol-EventDetails&amp;EventId=5245314\">presentation<\/a>\u00a0to investors on March 1, selling his vision after recently taking over from Rex Tillerson, who left to become U.S. Secretary of State.\u00a0<strong>Exxon will now ramp up spending on shale drilling,<\/strong>\u00a0after watching dozens of smaller companies profit from the surge in production in Texas, North Dakota and elsewhere over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exxon will dedicate a quarter of its 2017 spending budget on shale, putting $5.5 billion into the effort.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cMore than one quarter of the planned spending this year will be made in high-value, short-cycle opportunities, including in the Permian and Bakken basins,\u201d Exxon wrote in a March 1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.exxonmobil.com\/press-release\/exxonmobils-integration-diverse-portfolio-investments-drive-growth\">statement<\/a>.
