Now we have mainly gargantuan grain elevators, some so huge they can store enough grain for most of the U.S. for weeks at a time.\u00a0 These silos are highly energy-intensive and far apart, requiring legions of trucks both hauling grain long distances for storage and again for distribution burning massive amounts of finite diesel fuel.\u00a0 In the future there need to be thousands of much smaller, widely distributed storage silos that don\u2019t require fossil fuels.\u00a0 For example, before oil, grain elevators could be found about 7 miles apart, the distance a horse could travel in one day hauling a heavy load of grain.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><em>Without a massive redistribution of people back to the land, even that won\u2019t be enough, since 80% of the food will be stored where just 20% of the population lives \u2014 80% of Americans live within 200 miles of the coasts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>At some point of energy decline, there won\u2019t be enough oil to distribute crops by rail, truck, or barge, and 80% of communities are completely dependent on trucks, with no rail or water ports..\u00a0 Yet as climate change kicks in and successful harvests grow rarer and produce less food, even more storage will be needed at a much smaller scale across the nation.\u00a0 It would help future generations if we built new storage silos now.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Alice Friedemann\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.energyskeptic.com\/\"><em>www.energyskeptic.com<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0\u00a0author of \u201c<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/energyskeptic.com\/2016\/when-trucks-stop-running-so-does-civilization\/\"><em>When Trucks Stop Running: Energy and the Future of Transportation<\/em><\/a><em>\u201d, 2015, Springer and \u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Crunch-Whole-Grain-Artisan-Crackers\/dp\/148192267X\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1366846159&amp;sr=1-2&amp;keywords=friedemann+crunch\"><em>Crunch!
