Fake News as Official Policy<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
Faced with simultaneous disruptions of climate and energy supply, industrial civilization is also hampered by an inadequate understanding of our predicament. That is the central message of Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed\u2019s new book\u00a0Failing States, Collapsing Systems: BioPhysical Triggers of Political Violence<\/a><\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n
In the\u00a0first part of this review<\/a>, we looked at the climate and energy disruptions that have already begun in the Middle East, as well as the disruptions which we can expect in the next 20 years under a \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d scenario. In this installment we\u2019ll take a closer look at \u201cthe perpetual transmission of false and inaccurate knowledge on the origins and dynamics of global crises\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>While a clear understanding of the real roots of economies is a precondition for a coherent response to global crises, Ahmed says this understanding is woefully lacking in mainstream media and mainstream politics.<\/p>\n

The Global Media-Industrial Complex, representing the fragmented self-consciousness of human civilization, has served simply to allow the most powerful vested interests within the prevailing order to perpetuate themselves and their interests \u2026.\u201d (Failing States, Collapsing Systems<\/em>, page 48)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Other than alluding to powerful self-serving interests in fossil fuels and agribusiness industries, Ahmed doesn\u2019t go into the \u201chow\u2019s\u201d and \u201cwhy\u2019s\u201d of their influence in media and government.<\/p>\n

In the case of misinformation about the connection between fossil fuels and climate change, much of the story is widely known. Many writers have documented the history of financial contributions from fossil fuel interests to groups which contradict the consensus of climate scientists. To take just one example,\u00a0Inside Climate News<\/em>\u00a0revealed that\u00a0Exxon\u2019s own scientists were keenly aware of the dangers of climate change decades ago<\/a>, but the corporation\u2019s response was a long campaign of disinformation.<\/p>\n
